Penjara San Quentin ialah penjara terbesar di Amerika Syarikat dan terletak diSan Quentin California. Ianya mula memenjarakan penjenayah sejak 1852.Penjara San Quentin mempunyai keluasan sebesar 275 ekar. Ianya direka bagi memuatkan 3082 orang banduan pada satu-satu masa tetapi kerana masalah kesesakan yang kronik ianya menanpung 5222 orang banduan. Penjara San Quentin sangatlah besar ia mempunyai poskodnya sendiri bagi memudahkan hal surat menyurat. San Quentin juga merupakan satu-satunya penjara yang masih melakukan hukukan mati di California. Hukuman mati dilakukan menggunakan gas beracun sehingga 1996. Kini hukuman mati dilakukan dengan
menggunakan suntikan beracun.
Selain memegang gelaran penjara terbesar Amerika Syarikat, San Quentin juga merupakan penjara yang mempunyai paling ramai banduan yang menanti hukuman mati di Amerika. Sebanyak 637 orang banduan bilik akhir memanti waktu untuk dijatuhi hukuman.
Kos operasi tahunan San Quentin ialah USD 210 juta! Sebanyak 1718 kakitangan digaji bagi memastikan urusan harian penjara ini berjalan lancar.
Antara banduan yang pernah atau sedang menjalani hukuman penjara di San Quentin ialah Danny Trejo, pelakon utama Machete dan Spy Kids. Beliau dipenajrakan disini selama tiga tahun dari1965-1968. Pembunuh Robert F Kennedy, Sirhan Sirhan juga pernah dipenjarakan disini. Pembunuh bersiri Charles Manson juga pernah dipenjarakan disini sebelum dipindahkan pada tahun 1989.
Keadaan penjara San Quentin mungkin nampak teruk. Tapi jika dibandingkan dengan Penjara San Pedro Sula di Honduras, San Quention nampak macam hotel 5 bintang!
